The successful use of flying gunships for ground support in Vietnam led to additional variants being made and used through the present day. The most successful have been based on the C-130 airframe, providing good payload capability, endurance, and a stable firing platform. Often used in support of special operations forces, the AC-130H provides plenty of firepower. The 1/300th scale model work well with 28mm scale small unit skirmish games, providing extra firepower without having a larger scale model overwhelm the other figures on the table.
